It has been nearly 100 years since they pulled an airfield out of the wetlands on the West End of Alameda. In that space of time, this tiny, tenuous spot in the bay has launched early commercial airlines, the first trans-Pacific airmail flight, military operations for both the Army and Navy, Hollywood fantasy, and provided a backdrop for everyday lives.

Now, the Alameda Naval Air Station is on the precipice of transformation again.  Can you feel it?

We are a local artist and writer exploring the deeper history of this strange patch of landfill at the end of our city. What imprint has this place made on Alameda and its residents? Our project will collect, preserve, and amplify the voices of those who created, witnessed and experienced the base–in all of its iterations.

If you have a story to tell about your time on the base, we’d love to hear it! No story is too small! Your memories  will help us archive and illustrate a collective history of this incredible place.
